A bidet sprays a controlled stream of clean
water from a nozzle to wash you after you use the toilet. The water comes from
the same fresh water supply line that fills your toilet tank, not from the
bowl, and a dial or remote lets you adjust the pressure, the nozzle position,
and on many models the temperature. You stay seated the whole time.
That last point surprises people, and so does
the first one. The most common misconception about bidets is that they somehow
recirculate toilet water. They do not. A bidet taps into the supply line
upstream of the toilet, which means the water hitting you is the same water
that comes out of your bathroom sink.
Here is what is actually happening inside the
fixture.
Where the Water Comes From
Every bidet needs a source of clean,
pressurized water, and in an American bathroom there is one obvious place to
get it: the flexible supply line running from the shutoff valve in the wall to
the bottom of your toilet tank.
A plumber installs a T-valve at that
connection. The valve splits the incoming cold water two ways, sending part of
it to the toilet tank as before and part of it to the bidet. Nothing about how
your toilet flushes changes. The bidet simply shares the line.
That is the whole water story for a cold-water
bidet. Warm-water models need one more step, and there are three ways
manufacturers handle it:
A second line run to the hot water supply. Some non-electric bidet seats connect to both
the cold line at the toilet and a hot line borrowed from the bathroom sink,
then mix the two at a control valve. The temperature you get depends on how
fast hot water reaches that bathroom.
A small reservoir tank inside the seat. Electric bidet seats often hold a few cups of
water in an insulated tank and keep it heated. The warm water is instant, but
the reservoir runs out during a long wash, and the stream turns cool until it
reheats.
An instant heater inside the seat. Higher-end electric seats heat water on
demand as it passes through, the same principle as a tankless water heater installation.
There is no reservoir to run dry.
How the Nozzle Works
The nozzle is the part people picture wrong.
It is not sitting out in the open under the seat waiting to get dirty. On
nearly every modern bidet, the nozzle is retracted inside a housing at the back
of the seat or the rim, tucked out of the path of everything else.
When you activate the wash, water pressure or
a small motor extends the nozzle forward into position under you. It sprays at
an upward angle, does its job, then retracts back into the housing when you
stop. Most seats rinse the nozzle itself with clean water before and after each
use, and better models use a nozzle made of stainless steel or antimicrobial
plastic for the same reason.
Two nozzle positions are standard on most
units. The rear wash sits further back and is the one people use most. The
front wash, sometimes called a feminine wash, sits forward and delivers a
wider, gentler spray. On a single-nozzle unit the nozzle physically slides
between the two positions. On a dual-nozzle unit, there are two separate nozzles, and the unit picks one.
The Controls, and What Each One Actually Does
Whether your controls are a plastic dial on
the side of the seat or a wireless remote mounted on the wall, they are
adjusting a short list of things:
Pressure. This is the single most important setting and the one new users get
wrong. A bidet on full pressure is unpleasant. Almost everyone settles
somewhere in the lower third of the range. The control is throttling how much
of your home's water pressure reaches the nozzle.
Nozzle position. Moves the nozzle forward or back in small
increments so the stream lands where it should. Bodies differ, so the factory
default is rarely right for any specific person.
Water temperature. Only on warm-water models. Usually three or
four preset steps rather than a continuous dial.
Oscillation. Sweeps the nozzle back and forth during the wash instead of holding
one spot, which covers more area.
Air dryer. Electric seats blow warm air to dry you afterward. Manufacturers will
tell you it replaces toilet paper entirely. In practice it is slow, and most
people use it to finish rather than to do the whole job.
Heated seat. Exactly what it sounds like, and the feature people tell us they miss
most if they ever go back.
Non-electric bidets have only the first two.
Everything past pressure and position requires power, which is why the type of
bidet you choose determines what your bathroom needs to support it.
The Four Types and How They Differ Mechanically
Bidet attachments slide between your existing toilet bowl and
seat. They are a thin plastic panel holding a nozzle and a pressure dial, fed
by the T-valve. Cold water only in most cases, no power, no moving parts beyond
the nozzle.
Bidet seats replace your toilet seat entirely. This is where warm water, heated
seats, air dryers, and remotes live. Electric models need a nearby outlet,
which most older Atlanta bathrooms do not have.
Integrated bidet toilets build the whole system into the toilet
itself, with the nozzle housed in the bowl rim and the controls built into the
unit or a remote. One fixture, no attachment line.
Handheld sprayers mount beside the toilet on a hose, like a
kitchen sink sprayer. You aim it yourself. There is no nozzle housing and no
automation, just a valve and a trigger.
Water Pressure Is the Part That Trips Up Atlanta Homes
A bidet is a pressure-dependent fixture. Most
manufacturers want somewhere in the range of 20 to 80 psi to work properly, and
a bidet that is starved for pressure produces a weak dribble no amount of
turning the dial will fix.
That matters here. Plenty of homes around
Atlanta run pressure at the edges of that window, either low from an aging
pressure regulator or high enough from municipal supply to need one. If you are
already noticing weak water pressure elsewhere in the house, a bidet will make it obvious.
Hard water is the other local factor. Mineral content in the water leaves scale on the nozzle and inside the small internal passages over time, and a scaled nozzle sprays crooked or weakly. The same mineral buildup that is quietly working on your fixtures and water heater works on a bidet too, which is why self-cleaning nozzles and descaling modes exist on better units.
