Sewer Camera Inspection: How Plumbers See Inside Your Main Line

A sewer camera inspection, also called a sewer scope, uses a waterproof video camera mounted on a flexible cable that a plumber feeds through your home's main sewer line, starting at the cleanout and running out toward the city tap or septic tank. It takes 30 to 60 minutes for most homes, and it shows tree roots, cracks, bellies, offsets, and corrosion in real time on a monitor, before any of those problems turn into a backup in your house.

It is the only way to see the condition of a pipe that is buried several feet under your yard. Everything else is guesswork. A plumber can tell you a line is blocked, but only a camera tells you what is blocking it, exactly how far down the line the problem sits, and whether the pipe itself is still sound.

What a Sewer Camera Inspection Finds

The camera is looking for a short list of specific failures. These are the defects that show up again and again in Atlanta-area sewer lines:

Tree roots. Roots find their way into pipe joints and hairline cracks, chasing the moisture and nutrients inside. Once inside, they spread into a mat that catches paper and grease and chokes the line. Root intrusion is the single most common cause of main line failure in neighborhoods with mature trees.

Bellies and sags. A belly is a low spot where a section of pipe has dropped below grade, usually because the soil under it settled or shifted. Waste and water pool in the dip instead of flowing through, and solids build up in that pocket until the line stops draining.

Offsets and cracks. An offset is a joint where two pipe sections have shifted out of alignment, leaving a lip that snags debris. Cracks, fractures, and fully collapsed sections come from the same cause: ground movement, settling, or simple age.

Corrosion and scaling. Older cast iron lines rust from the inside out, building a rough, flaky interior that narrows the pipe and grabs everything passing through. Clay tile lines get brittle and separate at the joints.

Blockages and buildup. Grease, wipes, and foreign objects lodge in the line and form the starting point for a full clog. The camera shows exactly what the obstruction is made of, which determines whether it can be cleared or whether the pipe needs repair.

Pipe material and condition. The camera identifies what your line is actually made of, which matters a great deal in older Atlanta homes. Clay tile, cast iron, and Orangeburg all fail in different ways and on different timelines.

Why Atlanta Soil and Trees Make This Worse

North Georgia red clay is hard on buried pipe. It swells when it takes on water and shrinks back during dry stretches, and that constant expansion and contraction works against every joint in a sewer lateral. Over decades of wet winters and dry late summers, joints separate, sections drop out of alignment, and bellies form in lines that were laid perfectly level.

Add the tree canopy. Water oaks, willow oaks, and pines send roots out well past the drip line looking for moisture, and a sewer lateral is the most reliable water source in a yard. Intown neighborhoods and the older suburbs around Marietta, Decatur, and Smyrna have both conditions at once: shifting clay soil and 60-year-old trees sitting directly over 60-year-old pipe.

Housing age compounds it. Homes built before the 1970s around Atlanta frequently still have their original clay tile or cast iron sewer laterals. Those materials were not built to last indefinitely, and most of them are now well past the point where a visual check is worth doing. When You Need a Sewer Camera Inspection

Not every plumbing problem calls for a camera. These situations do:

You are buying a home. A standard home inspection does not include the sewer line. Inspectors check fixtures, visible plumbing, and drainage inside the house, but nothing underground. If the home is more than 20 years old or has mature trees in the yard, a sewer scope before closing is the difference between knowing what you are buying and finding out after you move in.

Drains keep backing up. One clog is a clog. Repeat clogs in the same drain, or clogs in multiple fixtures at once, point to something wrong in the main line rather than the branch.

Wastewater shows up where it should not. A toilet backing up into your shower or a floor drain overflowing when the washing machine runs means the main line is restricted and wastewater is taking the lowest exit it can find. That is a camera situation, not a plunger situation.

You have large trees near the line. Mature trees within 20 or 30 feet of the sewer lateral are a standing risk. If you are already seeing the early warning signs of root intrusion, an inspection tells you how far it has gone.

Before and after major work. A camera run before a repair confirms the scope of the problem, and a run after confirms the line is clear and correctly restored. The same applies before a renovation that will put new fixtures on an old line.

Sewage odors or soggy spots in the yard. A persistent sewer smell or an unusually green, wet patch in the lawn can indicate a break letting wastewater escape underground.

What Happens During the Inspection

The process is straightforward and does not require digging.

  1. Locating the cleanout. The plumber starts at your sewer cleanout, the capped access point that opens directly into the main line. Most Atlanta homes have one outside near the foundation. If yours cannot be found or does not exist, access is taken through another point in the system.
  2. Feeding the camera. A self-leveling waterproof camera head on a flexible push cable goes into the line and travels the length of the lateral toward the city connection. LED lights on the camera head light the pipe as it goes.
  3. Reading the line in real time. Video comes back to a monitor as the camera moves. The plumber watches for the defects listed above and notes the depth and distance of anything found.
  4. Pinpointing the location. A transmitter in the camera head sends a signal to a locator above ground, which marks the exact spot and depth of a problem in your yard. This is what makes targeted repair possible instead of trenching the whole run.
  5. Reviewing the footage with you. You should see what the camera saw. A good inspection ends with the plumber showing you the video and explaining what is normal wear and what needs attention.

What a Camera Inspection Cannot Do

A camera inspection is a diagnostic tool, not a repair. It finds and locates the problem, and it tells your plumber which repair is appropriate, whether that is professional drain cleaning to clear roots and buildup, a spot repair on a single failed section, or full sewer line repair on a line that has reached the end of its service life.

It also cannot see through a line that is completely full. If your main is backed up and standing full of water, the line usually has to be cleared first, then scoped to see the condition of the pipe underneath the blockage. That is why clearing and inspecting are often done in the same visit.
